The information on all the George Waltman comes from family tree prepared by Chawn Cardiff.

The 1790 Census shows a George Waltman living in Colerain Township, Bedford County, PA (about 1/3 of the way down on the left page). It lists one male over 16 years (George) and one female (his wife Margaret, about which little is known).

George is the son of George Jacob Waltman who is mentioned in the book House of Waltman (p213) and arrived in Philadelphia October 26, 1768, though one family tree I found implies he is the brother of George Jacob and the son of Emanuel Waltman who was on the same ship.

The 1800 Census shows George with a growing family, 3 boys under 10 and 4 girls under 10 in addition to George and his wife (both in the 25-45 category). (the entry is 7 lines down below the fold in the middle). The children would appear to be:

  • Jacob, born 2/17/1791, died 6/26/1864, Nobel County, OH
  • Margaret Eve, born around 1793
  • Elizabeth, born 7/28/1795, died before 1868 in Van Wert, OH
  • William, born 1796, died 1/2/1743, Bedford County, PA
  • Mary Ann born around 1798

This leaves two children un accounted for.

The 1810 Census gathers a bit more information and shows George (in the over 45 category, now which places his birth between 1755 and 1765) with two sons under 10, one 10 to 16 and one 16-26. Also two daughters under 10, 2 aged 10 to 16 and one 16-26 and his wife (in the over 45 category). Since the ship his father arrived on came in 1768, it seems a good bet that George was born in Germany. The new sons are probably:

  • George born 12/10/1800 (will be called George2 from here on)
  • Michael born around 1804

Nothing is known at this point about the young daughters. William and Jacob would fit for the other sons as do Margaret Eve, Elizabeth and Mary Ann for the other daughters. (On line 39, five lines from the top)

The 1820 Census breaks down the ages further and we see that the George Waltman household has one son 10-15 (Michael) and one aged 19-25 (George2), and George himself in the over 45 category. There are also two daughters 16-25 (which fits for Elizabeth and Mary Ann) and two in the 45 and older category. Nothing is known about the other woman (probably a sister of George or his wife). We also learn that three people in the household are engaged in agriculture, probably George and the two sons. (George's entry is about 6 lines down from the top).

The 1830 Census has a new look -- preprinted forms, in addition to finer divisions in the age categories. We find males aged under 5, from 30-40 and from 60-70 and females aged 20-30 and 60-70. (About 7 lines down from the top). Also, we find nearby a Micheal Waltman, aged 20-30 with presumably a wife aged 20-30 and a daughter under 5. George2 married Mary Magdelena Harclerode in 1826, so it would appear that new new family moved in with the old. We can also narrow George's birth to 1760-1765 (and the same with his wife).

The 1840 Census shows the growing family of George2, one boy 5-10 and two boys 10-15 and one daughter under 5 (in addition to George2 and Mary). The children are probably:

  • George, born around 1829 (called George3 from here on. I believe that this is my Great-Great-Grandfather. More on that later)
  • Joseph, also born around 1829
  • John F., born 1833
  • Mary Jane, born 2/10/1836, died 11/16/1913.

Still nearby is Micheal Waltman with a son and daughter each under 5 and a daughter 5-10. Also in Colerain Township is a William Waltman, aged 40-50, with a wife 30-40, and sons 5-10 and 10-15 and two daughters under 5 and one 5-10 years old. This fits with George2's brother.

The 1850 Census is a major change. We now see the names and ages of all household members. We see George2 has

  • George, age 51, occupation Carpenter
  • Mary M., age 42
  • John F, age 17
  • Mary J, age 14
  • Anne E., age 11
  • William H., age 7
  • Jacob D.L., age 4

There is no sign of George3 (though there is a George Waltman, age 19 working as a laborer in Mercer County, OH -- could be our George), Joseph or even George2's brother Micheal anywhere in Colerain Township. However, we'll continue with George2 for a while.

The Census of 1860 shows George2 at age 61 has moved up in the world, he owns $800 in real estate and has a personal estate of $100. George2 was at the bottom of the page so his family is on the next page.

  • Mary, age 52
  • Mary J, age 24, a domestic
  • William H., age 17, farm laborer
  • Harlan M., age 8

Still no sign of any other Waltmans in Colerain Township.

Unfortunately, the groups that are indexing the Federal Census are only up to the 1860 Census and then only partially. So the trail stops there for now.

So why do I think George3 is my ancestor? Not only is around the proper age, my ancestor George had many children, documented in a family bible. Among them are:

  • William H., born 10/12/1866
  • Harlan M., born 9/18/1871
  • John F., born 3/5/1871

The similarities of the names could be coincidence, but it is likely that my George named some of his sons after his brothers.
